Narrator: Ever wonder how food commercials,look so mouthwatering and perfect?,These food shoots can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars,,all so you'll buy more of these.,Visual engineer, Steve Giralt,,shoots photos and videos,for food and product-based commercials,in New York City and around the world.,I bring technology,and kind of traditional image-making processes together,in what I call visual engineering.,Narrator: One piece of that technology: robots.,Or, as they call them, motion controls.,Steve's long list of clients include big brands,,like Hershey's, Budweiser, Pepsi, and Starbucks.,Of course making food look so good comes with a price.,A single-day TV shoot can cost,between $50,000 to $100,000.,Steve: In these food shoots that we create,,we have a lot of moving parts.,Basically, you'll have, let's say, one item that's moving,,something else that's flashing and running into it,,something else that it's gonna land on.,We have to use a lot of different technologies,and synchronizing software,to basically allow those things all to happen,at the exact moment we need them to happen.,We love it, here we go.,Comes out pretty low.,Narrator: It also takes a symphony of people,to make the products look the best they can be.,Various stylists, engineers, and operators,work together to create the perfect shot.,My name is Michelle Gatton, and I am a food stylist.,When I get recipes, I read over the recipe,so I know what I'm gonna be doing.,So, in the back of my head,,I start thinking about how I'd like to do it.,It could change once we get on set with the different props,,what the art director wants could change,,but I start trying to create the recipe in my head,,'cause I'm only makin' it pretty much the first time on set.,I made these brownies yesterday,,just so we're not waiting on me making brownies.,And, to make them look like I just made them,,I just warmed up the chocolate with a heat gun,,and I'm adding a little bit of melted chocolate,to the cut side.,Steve: So here we've got our motorized slider,,which is moving a pump that's gonna have caramel on it,that'll be pumping down onto our brownies.,So, in the end, we'll have this shot,of this beautiful ribbon of caramel,kind of draping and curling on top of the brownie.,Narrator: There's a lot of trial and error.,Steve: Are you ready?,And here we go.,Yeah!,Nailed it!,Narrator: Every precise moment captured,is nailed down to the millisecond.,This is the benefit to using robots.,Human hands are also used on commercials,when timing is not a crucial factor.,Steve: We put a lot of effort into these visuals.,It's really cool to see your vision,kinda come to life and be spread with the world.,I think you have to have a really great understanding,of what is appetizing.,Everybody speaks the language of food.

look that bad honestly right,but of course we gotta fake it so what,advertisers use they use motor-oil,because I don't know I guess it looks,better on camera let's see if that,actually looks good ready three two one,oh I guess it's it's honestly the drip,looks nice compared to the thick maple,syrup here they not look good all right,let's just move on to the next,advertising hi okay the next hack we're,gonna do is the chicken noodle soup pack,let's say you have a can of chicken,noodles and then you want to advertise,it to make it look very app that looks,pretty appetizing or already look at,that that is what you would see normally,but there's a way to make that better,there's this trick advertisers use to,make that look more delicious all I,gotta do is fill the bottom of the bowl,so I have here some some candy,containers and then we're gonna fill,some of the buttons buttons ones just,like that supposedly if you pour it on,top it's gonna look plump like there's a,lot of like you know pasta and other,things in there so let's see what it,looks like,just like that so this is the control,subject I mean as you can see everything,kind of just sink down so this is kind,of like what it looks like but then,advertisers want you to make it like,this so they brainwash you to do all,these little tricks to like hey we have,a lot of chicken noodle soup so this is,what its gonna look have here some,creamy chicken noodle soup so I'm gonna,show you the regular way of how this,looks like so we got this and all you,gotta do is garnish it cilantro tomatoes,on top to make it look good,Wow look at that well it's good right,not really let me show you how to make,it look dope here's what they do when,they do this photography advertising,hacks they take one of these like a,small bowl or something put it in the,middle of the bowl now you can pour your,soup your creamy soup just like this so,it covers the top of the bottom of that,just like that now you can add your,garnish active,users a behemoth of the social world,famous for super creative collaborations,between users like the sea shanty collab,which became so successful mid pandemic,it started with lip-sync dancers and,makeup tutorials but now includes excel,tips and yes hospitality businesses,which are starting to pour in and drive,customers to their venues with it,victoria banham is a former influencer,of one million followers she now runs a,hospitality tick-tock agency called,antler social whose clients include,honest burgers i had to catch up with,her to find out how tick-tock is,changing the way that restaurants and,other hospitality businesses do,marketing,i've never used tick tock excellent,glad i'm here how is it different from,platforms that we're more familiar with,have come before it so i guess the main,thing from my perspective is that tik,tok is all about community,you don't really have that sense of,togetherness now on instagram or,facebook for sure or so you have trends,and challenges and music and sounds and,all of these different things that bring,people together that everyone creates,content for yeah together there are,quite big individual accounts right and,if you've got a million followers on,instagram and you're getting a hundred,thousand likes if i've got 10 followers,on instagram i'm not going to get 100,000 likes whereas if on tick tock if,you've got those same figures,it's easier to go viral easier i think,it's just a,fairer playing field just just in terms,of the physicality about how it works,there's a feed yep like,with most of them i'm gonna let you do,this one,i've literally never used it by the way,this isn't me playing dumb i've never,used tiktok what i'm imagining is,actually a,there's very little navigational control,you swipe your swipe and it just it,keeps feeding you based based on your,reactions and maybe you can,click on a trend button somewhere yeah,tick tock is there's no pretense that,you're building you know,just it's all algorithms it's all,algorithms you do have another feed,called the following feed but that is,kind of like a secondary and i actually,have never heard of anybody going on to,the volleyball i don't use the follow,feed,you're starting to get more um,well i was astonished there was this,woman selling xl courses oh she's,amazing,okay you know her of course yeah she's,amazing i can't wear username it's now,300 a day yeah a quick note from adam,here of course i was amazed she actually,makes 300 000 per month and she's genius,but like think of that like if you,thought of a niche on tick tock yeah and,she didn't exist and somebody went i'm,gonna learn oh i'm gonna just make,videos of excel you go that is,bought am i allowed to swear yeah i can,swear away not assume that that's a,that's a,niche that anybody would care about but,the way that she's created that,has made it engaging and when i started,when it was musically,um,the massive area was the singing,lip-syncing dancing like very,two-dimensional content with corona,and the huge influx of people coming,onto the platform um there's been a,massive speed change paved way for the,newer more mature areas of interest,having limelight there's some of the,mature areas of interest so,fitness is a huge one like if you're 13,you're not really going to care about,like nutrition carbs like keto diets but,that is something that people really,focus on so now gym is a huge area yeah,um you know diet or just like food in,general or teaching people about,nutrition like that's a huge sector yeah,um,something that we are seeing coming,through is more like the alcohol area,and obviously it's still a 50 50 years,or it's just a gray area really on tick,tock as to whether you post about it or,not but cocktail recipes and bartenders,and all that sort of thing is now coming,into play so that's a really interesting,one that i'm fascinated by,old people that's right people in their,late twenties are now on tick tock and,they bring their disposable incomes with,them,you're listening to served with podcast,and you need to subscribe in the next,five seconds or you two will eventually,get there's a bustling operation behind the,fancy cameras of food commercials it,takes dozens of people,and a few customized robots to make a,burger look this juicy,oh nothing here is simple as far as the,work we do is incredibly complex very,technical,has filmed commercials for big Brands,like Hershey's Heinz and Pepsi through,his production company the garage and,there's a lot of money on the line,filming one 30 second ad can cost,hundreds of thousands of dollars and,they're working against the clock,because they use real food which doesn't,stay pretty for long that's the misnomer,about everything baking makes things,harder we visited Steve's studio in,Brooklyn New York to see how his team,films the perfect burger,today Steve and his team are working on,a test shoot for Burger King they'll use,it to try and land the client yeah good,Brett Kurzweil is a veteran food stylist,it's his job to make the burger look,like a Whopper he usually has a budget,of a couple thousand dollars and he,always buys a lot more than he'll use so,he can pick out the perfect looking bun,Patty and veggies,then he gets to work but he doesn't cook,the meat all the way through because I,didn't want it to shrink too much I,wanted to get as much volume out of this,piece of meat as I could get even,perfect patties need final touches so he,uses a colorant made of gravy darkener,and soap to add a charred look he only,has to paint half the burger because the,camera films from just one side a,mixture of Vaseline and pulverized meat,helps fill in any holes and those grill,marks another trick of the trade Brett,heats up metal skewers and then I just,pushed into the burger with the hot,hot metal and it seared next he melts,the cheese using a clothes steamer,I just Cho I just said you're for food,but I also I'm trying to,um,control how much comes out so I've,covered up some of the holes,he cuts the onions and tomatoes on a,slant so they lie flatter,I think you would have been a really,good surge in another life,well yeah my mother would have been,happier,some other tricks denture cream to hold,up ingredients for condensation on cans,we'll use glycerin yeah not that much,too far too far while Brett finishes up,Steve's team is making sure everything,is ready on set the trickiest part is,combining what the client wants in the,commercial with what's technologically,possible they have no idea about,engineering yeah they're just like,robots are cool we want a robot but,since today he's working on a test shoot,he just has to implement his own vision,I'll be one of those people that,wears the protection,then he turns to master rigor Matthew,Huber he says half the time he has to,build the rigs completely from scratch,they provide the structure for the,specialized equipment that makes food,dance across the screen his work goes,hand in hand with the robots the robot,obviously is a hugely complicated and,expensive thing that's used for a lot of,what we do but if you only just need a,straight line movement pulling back it's,easier to set up a simple machine that,just does a single type of movement like,these air Pistons he uses to launch food,or these catapults,to save on buying new parts he uses a,lot of the same base pieces,it's like Legos you know you just put,stuff together,um take it apart do something different,with it the next time so we've used like,a lot of these pieces probably like,hundreds of times meanwhile Paola,Andreas Ramirez is finalizing the set,from the tables to the ketchup bottles,off to the side I want it to feel real,so if it's blank it won't feel like it's,it's a real commercial kitchen every,inch visible to the camera matters so,Paula's team built this tile wall just,for this shoot but they said it still,felt empty,so we just added this through these two,floating shelves up there,you plan for something and then we just,have to be ready for the unexpected her,typical props budget is forty thousand,dollars a shoot but she can pull a lot,from her Personal Collection this has,been 20 years of collecting and this is,like Salvation Army garage sales years,and years of,recording,I always like to have extra so if you're,shooting,example a glass of soda,I need to have at least six of the same,glasses for quick changes if they're,scratched because it's video so it's a,little bit one breaks exactly so when,that burger arrives it's game time I,gotta go on set yeah,now it's a race against the clock,we have the tomatoes to Crunch the angle,feels right,go ahead and roll camera,and push in a little bit closer,all right good today they have custom,built water cooled lights that don't,torch the food you just,you just have to have like these really,hot lights that would like cook the food,and it would die really quickly so like,the ice cream would be like impossible,to shoot in slow motion because it would,just melt the second you turn the lights,on but that lettuce will start to wilt,in a matter However,,this one's a little bit more like answering a common misconception that people,have about you or your business.,So if there's a question you get all the time or there's a common belief that,people have about you that's wrong.,This type of TikTok is perfect for you to set the record straight.,Here is an example of the get to know me TikTok.,And of course I've made my own version of this TikTok.,So go ahead and watch this and get to know me.,The fourth type of TikTok for your business is jumping on what's already,trending. You might not know this,,but there is a discover page on TikTok similar to the explore page on Instagram.,So I recommend pulling up your TikTok,,hitting the discover tab and check out what hashtags are trending.,So right away I see something called maple syrup day could be really relevant,for me as a Canadian.,There's also a hashtag called morph and that's a trending challenge.,So it looks like people are blending their pictures together to show their,transformation. There's another one called holiday covers, never zero.,Not sure what that is, but let's look into any one of them.,Let's check out morph,,and I can see that this hashtag has 42 million views.,So let's check out this Ariana morph and just to get an idea,,So it's pretty straight forward.,There's obviously a feature built into TikTok called morph that allows you to,mesh your photos together. So this may not really be an explicit,,you know, invitation to your business,,but it just might show your evolution as a human.,Maybe you can throw a few business-y pictures in there,,but really the point of this one is just to jump on the trending hashtags so,that maybe your TikTok goes viral.
